Methods:Inacross-sectionalsurvey,with1558menand1553womenaged65to87years,theriskof malnutritionwasassessedbytheMalnutritionUniversalScreeningTool(’MUST’),andmentalhealthwasmeasured bytheSymptomsCheckList10(SCL-10).BMIwascategorisedintosixgroups(20.0,20.0-22.4,22.5-24.9,25.0-27.4, 27.5-29.9,≥30.0kg/m2). Results:Theriskofmalnutrition(combiningmediumandhighrisk)wasfoundin5.6%ofthemenand8.6%ofthe women.Significantmentalhealthsymptomswerereportedby3.9%ofthemenand9.1%ofthewomen.Ina modeladjustedforage,maritalstatus,smokingandeducation,significantmentalhealthsymptoms(SCL-10score ≥1.85)werepositivelyassociatedwiththeriskofmalnutrition(oddsratio3.9[95%CI1.7-8.6]inmenand2.5[95% CI1.3-4.9]inwomen),theassociationwaspositivealsoforsubthresholdmentalhealthsymptoms.Forindividuals withBMI20.0theadjustedoddsratioforsignificantmentalhealthsymptomswas2.0[95%CI1.0-4.0]. Conclusions:Impairedmentalhealthwasstronglyassociatedwiththeriskofmalnutritionincommunityliving elderlymenandwomenandthisassociationwasalsosignificantforsubthresholdmentalhealthsymptoms.
