Methods:From15–28December2009weconductedasimplerapidscreeningtestofriskyalcoholuseusingthe singleitemmodifiedShortAssessmentScreeningQuestionnaire(mSASQ)byallwomencurrentlyenrolledinthe antenatalcareclinicinMaeLarefugeecamp,alongstandingdisplacedsettingontheThaiBurmaborder.Women self-reportedandgaveasecondaryreportoftheirmalepartners.Genderdifferencesinalcoholusewerefurther exploredinsemi-structuredinterviewswithcampresidentsonattitudes,behaviours,andbeliefsregardingalcohol andanalysedthematically. Results:Of636womenscreenedintheantenatalclinic,almostnone(0.2%,95CI0.0-0.9%)reportedriskyalcohol usepriortopregnancy,whereasaroundaquarter(24.4%,95CI21.2-27.9%)reportedriskyalcoholusebytheirmale partners.Interviewswith97campresidentsdescribedstrongsocialcontrolsagainstwomen’salcoholuseand men’sdrinkingtointoxication,despiteadominantperceptionthatthesocialcontextoflifeindisplacement promotedalcoholuseandthatcontrolsareloosening. Conclusions:Asastigmatisedbehaviour,alcoholuseisdifficulttoassess,particularlyinthecontextofhighly mobileadultmalepopulations:thesimpleassessmentmethodshereshowthatitisfeasibletoobtainadequate dataforthepurposesofinterventiondesign.Thedatasuggestthatriskydrinkingiscommonandnormalised amongmen,butthatthepopulationmayhavebeenpartiallyprotectedfromrapidrisesinproblemalcoholuse observedinnation-widedatafromThailand.Thechangingsocialcontextcontainsvulnerabilitiesthatmi
