Method:TherobustnessofFourierandensembleaveragingspectralanalysisto computeDFwastested.Videocapsuleimagesfromthedistalduodenumof11celiac patients(framerate2/sandpixelresolution576×576)wereanalyzed.Forpatients1, 2,...11,respectively,atotalof10,11,...,20sequentialimageswereextractedfroma randomlyselectedtimeepoch.Eachimagesequencewasartificiallyrepeatedto200 frames,simulatingperiodicitiesof0.2,0.18,...,0.1Hz,respectively.Randomwhitenoise atfourdifferentlevels,spatiotemporalphaseshift,andframeswithairbubbleswere added.Powerspectrawereconstructedpixel-wiseover200frames,andanaverage spectrumwascomputedfromthe576×576individualspectra.Thelargestspectral peakintheaveragespectrumwastheestimatedDF.Errorwasdefinedasthe absolutedifferencebetweenactualDFandestimatedDF. Results:ForFourieranalysis,themeanabsoluteerrorbetweenestimatedandactual DFwas0.032±0.052Hz.Errorincreasedwithgreaterdegreeofrandomnoise imposed.Incontrast,allensembleaverageestimatespreciselypredictedthe simulatedDF. Conclusions:TheensembleaverageDFestimateofvideocapsuleimageswith simulatedperiodicityisrobusttonoiseandspatiotemporalphaseshiftascompared withFourieranalysis.AccurateestimationofDFeliminatestheneedtoimpose complexmasking,extraction,and/orcorrectivepreprocessingmeas
