Methods:Thisstudywasarandomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled,within-subjecttrialinadultpsychiatric patientswhowerereceivingolanzapinecombinedwithlithium(Li)orvalproatesodium(VPA).Omega-3asfishoil withlessthan1g/dayofEPA/DHAoritsplacebowasaddedtopatients’olanzapineandmoodstabilizerregimens for6weeks.Metabolicparametersincludinganthropometricvariables,lipidprofile,metabolicsyndromeindices, C-reactiveprotein,fibrinogenandlipoprotein(a)[(Lp)(a)]wereassessedforparticipants. Results:Fortyoneparticipantscompletedthisstudy;20patientsreceivedomega-3and21patientsreceived placebo,addedtotheirregimenofSGAandmoodstabilizer.Omega-3additiondidnotmodulateanthropometric, metabolicsyndromeandlipidparameterchangesin6weeks.However,fibrinogenlevelssignificantlydecreased,Lp (a)didnotincreaseandnon-high-densitylipoproteincholesterol(non-HDL-C)didnotgobeyonditstargetlevel afteromega-3supplementation.Additionally,asignificantinter-groupeffectwasnotedforLp(a). Conclusions:Thisstudysuggeststhatuseofshort-termomega-3supplementationaddedtoacombinedregimen ofolanzapineandmoodstabilizermayhaveasmallmodulatingeffectonsomecardiovascularriskfactors.Trialsin longerperiodsoftimeandwithlargernumberofpatientsareneededtofurtherevaluatetheeffectsofomega-3 supplementsonpreventingcardiovascularriskf
