Cruvineletal.AddictionScienceClinicalPractice2013,8:4 /content/8/1/4 RESEARCH OpenAccess Screeningandbriefinterventionforalcoholand otherdruguseinprimarycare:associations betweenorganizationalclimateandpractice EricaCruvinel1*,KimberPRichter2,RonaldoRochaBastos3andTelmoMotaRonzani4 Abstract Background:Numerousstudieshavedemonstratedthatpositiveorganizationalclimatescontributetobetterwork performance.Screeningandbriefintervention(SBI)foralcohol,tobacco,andotherdrugusehasthepotentialto reachabroadpopulationofhazardousdrugusersbuthasnotyetbeenwidelyadoptedinBrazil’shealthcare system.Wesurveyed149primaryhealthcareprofessionalsin30clinicsinBrazilwhoweretrainedtoconductSBI amongtheirpatients.WeprospectivelymeasuredhowoftentheydeliveredSBItoevaluatetheassociation betweenorganizationalclimateandadoption/performanceofSBI. Methods:Organizationalclimatewasmeasuredbythe2009OrganizationalClimateScaleforHealthOrganizations,a scalevalidatedinBrazilthatassessesleadership,professionaldevelopment,teamspirit,relationshipwiththe community,safety,strategy,andremuneration.PerformanceofSBIwasmeasuredprospectivelybyweekly assessmentsduringthethreemonthsfollowingtraining.Wealsoassessedself-reportedSBIandself-efficacyfor performingSBIatthreemonthspost-training.Weusedinferentialstatisticstodepictandtestforthesignificanceof associations. Results:TeamswithbetterorganizationalclimatesimplementedSBImorefrequently.Organizationalclimatefactors mostcloselyassociatedwithSBIimplementationincludedprofessionaldevelopmentandrelationshipwiththe community.ThedimensionsofleadershipandremunerationwerealsosignificantlyassociatedwithSBI. Conclusions:OrganizationalclimatemayinfluenceimplementationofSBIandultimatelymayaffecttheabilityof organizationstoidentifyandaddressdruguse.
