Methods:Participantswerethesubsetof417respondentstoasurvey,sentto7000randomlyselectedmembers ofanAustralianelectoralcommunity,whoindicatedthattheyhadsoughthelpfordepressionfromfamilyor friends.Oneitemonthesurveyaskedparticipantstoindicatetheadvantagesordisadvantagesofseekinghelp fromfamilyorfriends.Acodingsystemwasdevelopedbasedonacontentanalysisoftheresponsestotheitem. Eachoftheresponseswasthencodedbytworaters. Results:Respondentsidentifiedbothadvantagesanddisadvantagesofseekingsupportfromfriends.Themost commonlycitedadvantagewassocialsupport(n=282)includingemotionalsupport(n=154),informational support(n=93),companionshipsupport(n=36)andinstrumentalsupport(n=23).Otheradvantagesrelatedto family’sorfriend’sbackgroundknowledgeofthepersonandtheircircumstances(n=72),theopportunityto offloadtheburdenassociatedwithdepression(n=62),thepersonalattributesoffamilyandfriends(n=49),their accessibility(n=36),andtheopportunitytoeducatefamilyandfriendsandincreasetheirawarenessaboutthe respondent’sdepression(n=30).Themostcommonlyciteddisadvantageswerestigma(n=53),inappropriate support(n=45),thefamilymember’slackofknowledge,trainingandexpertise(n=32)andtheadverseimpact ofthehelpseekingonthefamily/friend(n=20)andtherelationship(n=18).
