Turmeletal.Cough2012,8:2 /content/8/1/2 Cough RESEARCH OpenAccess Seasonalvariationsofcoughreflexsensitivityin eliteathletestrainingincoldairenvironment JulieTurmel1,ValérieBougault2andLouis-PhilippeBoulet1* Abstract Background:Exercise-inducedcoughiscommonamongathletes.Athletestrainingincoldairoftenreportan increasinglytroublesomecoughduringthewinterseason.Chronicairwayirritationorinflammationmayincrease thesensoryresponseofcoughreceptors.Theaimofthisstudywastoevaluatetheseasonalvariabilityofcough reflexsensitivitytocapsaicinineliteathletes. Methods:Fifty-threeelitewinterathletesand33sedentarysubjectscompletedarespiratoryquestionnaireanda capsaicinprovocationtestduringthesummer,fall,andwinter.Allergyskinpricktests,spirometry,eucapnic voluntaryhyperpneatest(EVH),methacholineinhalationtest(MIT),andinducedsputumanalysiswerealso performed. Results:Inathletes,theprevalenceofcoughimmediatelyafterexercisewashigh,particularlyduringwinter. Athletesoftenshowedalateoccurrenceofcoughbetween2-8hafterexercise.Thecoughreflexsensitivityto capsaicinwasunchangedthroughtheseasonsinbothathletesandnon-athletesubjects.Nosignificant correlationswerefoundingroupsbetweencoughreflexsensitivitytocapsaicinandthenumberofyearsinsport training,thenumberofhoursoftrainingperweek,EVHresponse(%fallinFEV1),airwayresponsivenessto methacholine(PC20),airwayinflammationoratopy. Conclusion:Theprevalenceofcoughimmediatelyandafewhoursafterexerciseishighinathletesandmore frequentlyreportedduringwinter.However,coughdoesnotseemtobeassociatedwithcoughreflex hypersensitivitytocapsaicin,bronchoconstriction,orairwayinflammationinthemajorityofathletes.
