SegmentationofExtrapulmonaryTuberculosisInfection UsingModifiedAutomaticSeededRegionGrowing ImanAvazpour,M.IqbalSaripan,AbdulJalilNordin, andRajaSyamsulAzmirRajaAbdullah Abstract Intheimagesegmentationprocessofpositronemissiontomographycombinedwithcomputedtomography (PET/CT)imaging,previousworksusedinformationinCTonlyforsegmentingtheimagewithoututilizing theinformationthatcanbeprovidedbyPET.ThispaperproposestoutilizethehotspotvaluesinPETto guidethesegmentationinCT,inautomaticimagesegmentationusingseededregiongrowing(SRG)tech- nique.Thisautomaticsegmentationroutinecanbeusedaspartofautomaticdiagnostictools.Inaddition totheoriginalinitialseedselectionusinghotspotvaluesinPET,thispaperalsointroducesanewSRGgrowing criterion,theslidingwindows.Fourteenimagesofpatientshavingextrapulmonarytuberculosishavebeenex- aminedusingtheabove-mentionedmethod.ToevaluatetheperformanceofthemodifiedSRG,threefidelity criteriaaremeasured:percentageofunder-segmentationarea,percentageofover-segmentationarea,andav- eragetimeconsumption.Intermsoftheunder-segmentationpercentage,SRGwithaverageoftheregion growingcriterionshowstheleasterrorpercentage(51.85%).Meanwhile,SRGwithlocalaveragingandvar- ianceyieldedthebestresults(2.67%)fortheover-segmentationpercentage.Intermsofthetimecomplexity, themodifiedSRGwithlocalaveragingandvariancegrowingcriterionshowsthebestperformancewith 5.273saverageexecutiontime.Theresultsindicatethattheproposedmethodsyieldfairlygoodperformance intermsoftheover-andunder-segmentationarea.Theresultsalsodemonstratedthatthehotspotvaluesin PETcanbeusedtoguidetheautomaticsegmentationinCTimage.
