SedentaryBehaviorIsNotAssociatedwith CardiometabolicRiskinAdultswithAbdominalObesity K.AshleeMcGuire1,RobertRoss1,2* 1School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada, 2Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Queen’s University,Kingston,Canada Abstract Objective:Theprimaryaimofthisstudywastodeterminewhethertimespentinsedentarybehaviors(SED)wasassociated with2-hourglucoseandinsulinresistanceinadultswithabdominalobesity.Wealsoexaminedtheassociationbetween lightphysicalactivity(LPA)andsporadic(accumulatedinbouts,10minutesinduration)moderate-to-vigorousphysical activity(MVPA)withglucosemetabolism. Methods: Participants were 135 inactive, abdominally obese adults recruited from Kingston, Canada. SED and physical activity were determined by accelerometry over 7 days and summarized as SED (accelerometer counts/min ,100), LPA (counts/min 100–1951), andMVPA(counts/min $1952). A75goral glucosetolerancetest wasused toascertain 2-hour glucose;thehomeostasismodelofassessmentwasusedtodetermineinsulinresistance(HOMA-IR);lipid,lipoproteinsand blood pressure were determined using standard protocols. Secondary analyses considered the association between SED andphysicalactivitywithothercardiometabolicriskfactors. Results:Participantsspent627.2682.9min/dinSED,289.0691.7min/dinLPAand19.2613.5min/dinMVPA.NeitherSED northephysicalactivityvariableswereassociatedwith2-hourglucoseorHOMA-IR(p.0.05).Insecondaryanalyses,SED wasnotassociatedwithanycardiometabolicriskfactor(p.0.1);withtheexceptionofbloodpressure(p,0.05),LPAwas notassociatedwithanycardiometabolicriskfactor(p.0.1);andMVPAwasindependentlyassociatedwithtotalcholesterol andtriglycerides(p,0.05). Conclusions:ObjectivelymeasuredSEDwasnotassociatedwith2-hrglucoseorHOMA-IR.Ourfindingsalsosuggestthat theaccumulationofLPAandsporadicMVPAisnotassociatedwithglucosemetabolisminadultswithabdominalobesity.
