Foraging is ultimately a nutrientconsumptionexercise,buttheeffectofseasonalityperseonchangesinforagingbehavior,particularlyasitrelates tonutrientregulation,ispoorlyunderstood.Here,weshowthatfield-collectedfireantcolonies,returnedtothelaboratory andmaintainedunderidenticalphotoperiod,temperature,andhumidityregimes,andpresentedwithexperimentalfoods thathaddifferentprotein(p)tocarbohydrate(c)ratios,practicesummer-andfall-specificforagingbehaviorswithrespectto protein-carbohydrate regulation. Summer colonies increased the amount of food collected as the p:c ratio of their food becameincreasinglyimbalanced,butfallcoloniescollectedsimilaramountsoffoodregardlessofthep:cratiooftheirfood. Choiceexperimentsrevealedthatfeedingwasnon-random,andthatbothfallandsummerantspreferredcarbohydrate- biasedfood.However,antsrarelyateallthefoodtheycollected,andtheircachedordiscardedfoodalwayscontainedlittle carbohydrate relative to protein. From a nutrient regulation strategy, ants consumed most of the carbohydrate they collected,butregulatedproteinconsumptiontoasimilarlevel,regardlessofseason.Wesuggestthatvariedseasonalfood collectionbehaviorsandnutrientregulationstrategiesmaybeanadaptationthatallowslong-livedanimalstomeetcurrent andfuturenutrientdemandswhennutrient-richfoodsareabundant(e.g.springandsummer),andtoconserveenergyand bemetabolicallymoreefficientwhennutritionallybalancedfoodsarelessabundant.
