To answerthis question, we positthatbrainfunctionalityrequireshighinterconnectivityandshortconductiondelays.Basedonthisassumptionwe searched for the optimal brain architecture by comparing different candidate designs. We found that the optimal design depends on the number of neurons, interneuronal connectivity, and axon diameter. In particular, the requirementtoconnectneuronswithmanyfastaxonsdrivesthesegregationofthebrainintowhiteandgraymatter. Theseresultsprovideapossibleexplanationforthestructureofvariousregionsofthevertebratebrain,suchasthe mammalianneocortexandneostriatum,theaviantelencephalon,andthespinalcord.
