Two human zoonoses, hemorrhagicfeverwithrenalsyndrome(HFRS)andhantaviruspulmonarysyndrome(HPS),arecausedbyhantavirusesand casefatalityrateshavereached12%forHFRSand50%forHPSinsomeoutbreaks.Symptomatichantavirusinfectionsin EuropearesummarisedasHFRSmainlyduetoPuumala,Dobrava-BelgradeandSaaremaavirus.WhileHFRShasanoverall lowincidenceinEurope,thenumberofcasesvariesfrom100peryearinallEasternandSouthernEuropeupto1,000per year only in Finland. To assess the quality of hantavirus diagnostics, the European Network for the Diagnostics of ‘‘Imported’’ViralDiseases(ENIVD)organisedafirstexternalqualityassurance(EQA)in2002.ThepurposeofthissecondEQA studyistocollectupdatedinformationontheefficiencyandaccuratenessofhantavirusserologicalmethodsappliedby expertlaboratories.Aserumpanelof14sampleswassentto28participantsinEuropeofwhich27sentresults.Performance inhantavirus diagnosisvariednotonlyonthemethodusedbutalso onthelaboratoriesandthesubclassofantibodies tested.Commercialandin-houseassaysperformedalmostequally.Enzymeimmunoassaysweremainlyusedbutdidnot showthebestperformanceswhileimmunoblotassayswerethelessemployedandshowedoverallbetterperformances. IgMantibodieswerenotdetectedin61%o
