Whenusingoptimumcontributionselectionwitharestrictionontherateofinbreeding(?F)to selectagainstadiseaseallele,selectiondirectlyonDNA-genotypesis,asexpected,themost ef?cientstrategy. SelectionforBLUPorsegregationanalysisbreedingvalueestimatesboth need1–2generationsmoretohalvethefrequencyofthediseaseallele,whilethesemethods donotrequireknowledgeofthediseasemutationattheDNAlevel. BLUPandsegregation analysismethodswereequallyef?cientwhenselectingagainstadiseasewithsinglegeneor complex polygene inheritance, i.e. knowledge about the mode of inheritance of the disease wasnotneededforef?cientselectionagainstthedisease.
