Many novel materials or methods to prevent HAB have not yet been employed except for clay dispersion, in which can the resulting sedimentation on the seafloor can also cause alterationinmarineecologyorsecondaryenvironmentalpollution.Inthecurrentstudy,weinvestigatedthatantimicrobial peptidehaveapotentialincontrollingHABwithoutcytotoxicitytoharmlessmarineorganisms.Here,antimicrobialpeptides are proposed as new algicidal compounds in combating HAB cells. HPA3 and HPA3NT3 peptides which exert potent antimicrobialactivityviaporeformingactioninplasmamembraneshowedthatHPA3NT3reducedthemotilityofalgalcells, disruptedtheirplasma membrane,andinduced theeffluxof intracellularcomponents.Against raphidoflagellatesuchas Heterosigmaakashiwo,Chattonellasp.,andC.marina,itdisplayedarapidlysingactionincellmembranesat1,4mMwithin 2min. Comparatively, its lysing effects occurred at 8mM within 1h in dinoflagellate such as Cochlodium polykrikoides, Prorocentrummicans,andP.minimum.Moreover,itslysingactioninducedthelysisofchloroplastsandlossofchlorophylla. Inthecontrary,thispeptidewasnoteffectiveagainstSkeletonemacostatum,harmlessalgalcell,evenat256mM,moreover, itkilledonlyH.akashiwoorC.marinainco-cultivationwithS.costatum,indicatingtoitsselectivealgicidalactivitybetween harmful and harmless algal cells.
