Methods:Atotalof75consecutiveadultsubjectswereenrolledfrom2psychiatricunits,1withinageneral hospitaland1atapsychiatrichospitalinsouthernTaiwan.Aretrospectivechartreviewofthepsychiatric inpatientswasconductedforpatientsthatmetthecriteriaforasentineleventbetweenJuly2004andMay2011. Acomparisonofthehospitalsettingswasmadeanddifferencesbetweensuicidalandnon-suicidalsentinelevents studied. Results:Psychiatricpatientsthatreceivedgeneralhospitalpsychiatricservices(1)appearedtoexperiencea sentineleventsoonafteradmission,(2)thetimebetweenthesentineleventoccurrenceandpatientdeathwas shorter,(3)therewasahigherprobabilityofpotentialmedicalillnessthanamonginpatientstreatedata specializedpsychiatrichospital,(4)thesentineleventsubjectsthatcommittedsuicidewereyounger,hadashorter hospitalstay,shortertimetooccurrenceofthesentineleventfollowedbyanunexpecteddeaththanthenon- suicidalgroup,and(5)ayoungerage,highereducationlevel,previoussuicideattemptandfamilypsychiatric historywereimportantpredictorsofsuicideamongpsychiatricinpatients. Conclusions:Theresultsofthisstudysuggestthatpsychiatricinpatientstreatedatageneralhospitalrequire carefulexaminationforpotentialphysicalillnessandgreatereffortstopreventsuicide.Ayoungerage,higher educationlevel,historyofaprevioussuicideattemptandfamilypsychiatrichistoryareadditionalriskfactorsfor suicideamongthesepatients.
