Julianetal.ChiropracticOsteopathy2010,18:32 /content/18/1/32 RESEARCH OpenAccess SportschiropracticmanagementattheWorld IceHockeyChampionships ChrisJulian1,WayneHoskins2*,AndrewLVitiello3 Abstract Background:Icehockeyisaninternationalsport.Injuriesoccurinafullbodyfashion,toanumberoftissues, commonlythroughbodycontact.Thereisalackofliteraturedocumentingthescopeofsportschiropractic practice.Thus,itwastheaimtodocumentthetype,scopeandseverityofconditionspresentingto,andthe treatmentprovidedby,theNewZealandteamchiropractoractingasaprimaryhealthproviderforthedurationof the2007WorldIceHockeyChampionships. Methods:Allconditionspresentingwererecorded.Diagnosiswasrecordedalongwithclinicalparametersof injury:injurytype,severity,mechanismandwhetherreferraloradvancedimagingwasrequired.Alltreatment providedwascontinuouslyrecorded,includinginformationonthenumberoftreatmentsrequiredandthereason, duration,typeandlocationoftreatment. Results:Playerspresentedfordiagnosisofinjury50times.Muscle(34%),joint(24%)andtendoninjuries(18%) weremostcommon.Playerspresentedwithanewinjury76%ofthetime.Mostinjurieshadbeenpresentforless thanoneweek(84%),with53%occurringthroughacontactmechanism.Injurieswerecommonattrainingand matchlocations.Onlytwoinjuriesrequiredtheplayertostopplayingortraining,bothofwhichwerereferredfor advancedimaging.Duringthestudy,134treatmentconsultationswererenderedto45playerinjuries.Eightyper- centofinjuriesweremanagedwithfourorlesstreatments.Threequartersoftreatmentwasprovidedattraining locationswithtreatmentdurationpredominantlybeingbetween11-15minutes(71%)and16-20minutes(27%). Mosttreatmentdeliveredwaspassiveinnature(71%)althoughcombinationactiveandpassivecarewasprovided (27%).Treatmenttypicallyinvolvedjoint(81%)andsofttissuebasedtherapies(81%)andwasdeliveredinafull bodymanner. Conclusions:Thisstudydocumentedtheinjuryprofileoficehockeyataninternationallevelofcompetition.It documentedtheconditionspresentingtoachiropractorfordiagnosisandthetreatmentprovided.Treatmentwas cons
