Results:Togaininsightintothemolecularprocessregulatingripeninginapple,andtocomparetotomato (modelspeciesforripeningstudies),weutilizedbothhomologousandheterologous(tomato)microarraytoprofile transcriptomedynamicsofgenesinvolvedinfruitdevelopmentandripening,emphasizingthosewhichare ethyleneregulated. Theuseofbothtypesofmicroarraysfacilitatedtranscriptomecomparisonbetweenappleandtomato(forthelater usingdatapreviouslypublishedandavailableattheTED:tomatoexpressiondatabase)andhighlightedgenescon- servedduringripeningofbothspecies,whichinturnrepresentafoundationforfurthercomparativegenomic studies. Thecross-speciesanalysishadthesecondaryaimofexaminingtheefficiencyofheterologous(specificallytomato) microarrayhybridizationforcandidategeneidentificationasrelatedtotheripeningprocess.Theresultingtran- scriptomicsdatarevealedcoordinatedgeneexpressionduringfruitripeningofasubsetofripening-relatedand ethyleneresponsivegenes,furtherfacilitatingtheanalysisofethylenerespon
