Abuyaetal.BMCPediatrics2012,12:80 /1471-2431/12/80 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Effectofmother’seducationonchild’ snutritional statusintheslumsofNairobi BentaAAbuya1*,JamesCiera1,2andElizabethKimani-Murage3 Abstract Background:Malnutritioncontinuestobeacriticalpublichealthprobleminsub-SaharanAfrica.Forexample,in EastAfrica,48%ofchildrenunder-fivearestuntedwhile36%areunderweight.Poorhealthandpoornutritionare nowmoreacharacteristicofchildrenlivingintheurbanareasthanofchildrenintheruralareas.Thisisbecause theprotectivemechanismofferedbytheurbanadvantageinthepast;thatis,thehealthbenefitsthathistorically accruedtoresidentsofcitiesascomparedtoresidentsinruralsettingsisbeingerodedduetoincreasing proportionofurbanresidentslivinginslumsettings.Thisstudysoughttodetermineeffectofmother’ seducation onchildnutritionalstatusofchildrenlivinginslumsettings. Methods:DataarefromamaternalandchildhealthprojectnestedwithintheNairobiUrbanHealthand DemographicSurveillanceSystem(NUHDSS).Thestudyinvolves5156childrenaged0–42months.Dataon nutritionalstatususedwerecollectedbetweenOctober2009andJanuary2010.Weusedbinomialandmultiple logisticregressiontoestimatetheeffectofeducationintheunivariableandmultivariablemodelsrespectively. Results:Resultsshowthatcloseto40%ofchildreninthestudyarestunted.Maternaleducationisastrong predictorofchildstuntingwithsomeminimalattenuationoftheassociationbyotherfactorsatmaternal, householdandcommunitylevel.Otherfactorsincludingatchildlevel:childbirthweightandgender;maternal level:maritalstatus,parity,pregnancyintentions,andhealthseekingbehaviour;andhouseholdlevel:social economicstatusarealsoindependentlysignificantlyassociatedwithstunting. Conclusion:Overall,mothers’educationpersistsasastrongpredictorofchild’snutritionalstatusinurbanslum settings,evenaftercontrollingforotherfactors.Giventhatstuntingisastrongpredictorofhumancapital, emphasisongirl-childeducationmaycontributetobreakingthepovertycycleinurbanpoorsettings.
