Methods One hundred and twent y-eight pat ients wit h heart- burn, substernal chest pain and regurgitation or food reflux were assessed among 10 hospitals in China. Each symptom w as scored according to the severity and frequency ( five scales) . The highest score for one patient w as 40. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and esophageal 24-hour pH monitoring were carried out in patients w ith symptom score more than 6, and t he results were compared with RDQ score to determine the threshold value for GERD. Results RDQ score correlated positively w ith the severity of reflux esophagit is. Esophageal pH monitoring showed that patients w ith abnormal RDQ had higher DeMeester scores compared w ith those w ith normal RDQ scores (20. 1 vs. 16. 4) .
