An Analysis of Obama’s 2011 State of the Union AddressIntroductionAmerican political speeches are usually considered as one of the most valuable kinds of text in academic studying for their skillfulness in rhetoric, well-balanced words and elaborate structures.To have a try in this type, our article would focus on how American President Obama managed to weaken his audiences’ anger, persuading them believing his new policies and blueprint in 2011’s State of the Union Address despite the unsatisfying outcomes of his previous years’ work. To regain favor with the voting public, Obama employed a strategy of building identification that included 1) admitting noncooperationbetween the two parties wisely while encouraging cooperation rationally; 2) mastering era pulse with clear logic and ambitions to achieve more; 3)arising American people’s positive emotions4) concerning what people concerns, making the ethos he built with more security.Rhetorical SituationBarack Obama, the first African-American politician elected as the American President because of his wisdom, skillfulness and eloquence in speech had had been on his position for two years, but things like “change”, “government regulation”, “stimulating economy” and “creating jobs for working class” didn’t parallel with what he had promised to American people, who once had been full of hope to the changes that their new president would bring about but now were disappointed and angry because of a feeling of being cheated. The anger of American society seemed to run out of control during the November 2010 midterm elections, where Obama and his Democratic allies lost at least half of the Senate seats, at least ten governorships, and more than sixty House seats the most of a midterm election since 1938. President Obama had raised people’s expectations to too high a level that once it cannot be achieved, people’s disappointment and anger would fall on himas drastically and unbearably as they can.Faced with such an embarrass
