Type B3 A tumor comprised predominantly of epithelial cells with a round or polygonal shape and exhibiting mild atypia admixed with a minor component of lymphocytes; foci of squamous metaplasia and perivascular spaces are common Synonyms: Well-differentiated thymic carcinoma; epithelial thymoma; squamoid thymoma. Type B3 thymoma with invasion of pleura and pericardium. Macroscopy of B3 thymoma(left) and remnant thymus(right). Type B3 thymoma. A. Lobular growth pattern and infiltration into mediastinal fat (Masaoka stage Ⅱ). B. Clear cell areas (top and right) adjacent to an area with a common histology (darker region in lower left part of image). C. Ground glass appearance of tumor cells. Low number of intraepithelial lymphocytes. D. Large cell variant with B2-like large nuclei and prominent nucleoli: by its atypia the case appears “borderline” to squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus. Type B3 thymoma.A. Large cell variant: large nuclei and conspicuous nucleoli and paucity of intraepithelial lymphocytes.B. Typical perivascular spaces with tumor palisading.C.
