Finite Element Modeling and Analysis of a Passenger Car Body Structure

Abstract
A FE model of a small size saloon car body-in-white is constructed using measurements obtained from the actual body in the laboratory, and static and dynamic finite element analyses are performed on the model. In static analysis, primary emphasis is given to the calculation of torsional and bending stiffness of the body using two appropriate loading cases.
Introduction
Car body structures can be categorized in two groups:
1)Separate chassis frame and body
2) Fully integral body
Fully integral body structures not only provide lightweight, but also maximize passenger safety. Design can be made such that front and rear parts of the body damp most of the energy during an impact through high amounts of deformation.
The body-in-white of the small size saloon car,
which is statically and dynamically analyzed in this study, is a fully integral body structure.
Design and analysis of automotive body structures
For bending stiffness analysis, a vertical test load is applied on the mid floor area of the body which is fixed from its rear and front suspension connection points . For passenger cars, it is suggested that mid span bending and door departure deflections should not exceed 1.27 mm for a 6800 N mid span vertical load.

For the bending stiffness analysis, vertical load is applied on the mid floor area of the body, while all six dof of the nodes in front and rear suspension connection areas are fixed. Bending load is distributed among sellected 2464 nodes, which are located in the floor panel of the model.
