Rhetorical question A rhetorical question is a question which requires not answer, because it expresses a truth which cannot be denied. It is used for emphasis. Such a question may appear at the beginning, middle, or end of a composition. The following points should be kept in mind: 1)?A rhetorical question focuses and intensifies the reader’s interest. 2)?A rhetorical question should be used only to give force to the writer’s main ideas. 3)?The rhetorical question---like any stylistic device-----should be used sparingly for best effect. For example, Was I not at the scene of the crime? If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind? (Shelly) Is that the way to treat your wife? Could I say anything else at that time? 2. Synecdoche (提喻) Synecdoche means giving the part for the whole or vice versa, using a kind of thing to represent another big kind or vice versa, and using raw material to represent the thing made of it. A. Use the part to represent the whole 1) Twenty years later when he came back to his home town, he saw many new faces. (strangers) 2) The farms are short of hands during the harvest season.
