English Abstract Abstract Chinese cold joke, as a special linguistic phenomenon, has been gaining popularity in recent years among Chinese. As far as the current situation of researches on Chinese cold jokes is concerned, a majority of studies, only from pragmatics perspective investigate how Chinese cold joke can be explained by Relevance Theory and Speech Act Theory, are treating the semantic analysis of Chinese cold joke as an ostensive-inferential communicative act. They pay little attention to the study of Chinese cold joke from the perspective of theories on humor. The present study intends to analyze humor types in Chinese cold jokes with a comparion with traditional jokes, which based on two filters: Raskin’s Main Hypothesis and Giora’s three conditions for joke well-formedness. The major contents of this research are as follows: First and foremost, cold jokes are found to make use of several types of humor: Metahumor, Nonsense Humor, and Incongruity-Resolution Humor. The Nonsense Humor in cold jokes can be further classified into three subtypes—Partial Resolution, No Resolution, and Creating New Incongruity. Among these types of humor in cold jokes, only the humor of Incongruity-Resolution and Partial Resolution are employed in traditional jokes. Secondly, although Incongruity-Resolution Humor is exploited in both traditional jokes and cold jokes, cold jokes cover a higher percentage of sexual or other vulgar topics than traditional jokes. In addition, linguistic ambiguity is extensively employed in this class of cold jokes.
