Wagner Merrifield-Simmons Hosoya . , Æ. ; Hosoya ; Merrifield-Simmons I ABSTRACT Molecular topological indices are very important topics in graph theory and combinatorial matrix theory. It is a map from the set of chemical com- pounds represented by molecular graphs to the set of real numbers. Many topological indices are closely correlated with some physico-chemical char- acteristics of the underlying compounds. The Hosoya index z (G) and the Merrifield-Simmons index σ (G) of a graph G are two prominent examples of topological indices which are of interest in combinatorial chemistry. They are defined as the number of matchings (independent edge subsets) and the num- ber of independent vertex subsets of a graph, respectively. This thesis mainly discuss two problems: (1)on the Merrifield-Simmons indices and Hosoya indices of ordering unicyclic graphs with a prescribed di- ameter. (2)the variation deleting the vertex from cycle of unicyclic graphs. The organization of this thesis is as follows. In Chapter 1, we introduce a background of the graph theory, Merrifield-Simmons indices and Hosoya in- dices. In Chapter 2, we discuss Merrifield-Simmons indices and Hosoya indices of ordering unicyclic graphs with a prescribed diameter.
