English humor’ characters Pervasive universal, widespread Spontaneousnatural , unaffected Irony rules  Irony is the dominant ingredient in English humor (a matter of quantity rather than quality) Joking but not joking. Caring but not caring. Serious but not serious the Understatement rule A form of irony (It’s a subtle, refined form of humor ) It means the way to say something is low-key ,euphemistic eg :an outstanding performance is “not bad” More of quantity rather than quality Not easy to get the point to laugh or imitate this way of talking Why they prefer this kind of way of talking? Because there are Strict prohibitions on earnestness, emoting, boasting….. So they prefer to go the opposite extreme way…. The self-deprecation rule  A form of irony Saying the opposite idea of what we really mean and try to let others understand the way we want them to … Why they like self-deprecation? Modesty? for easing the embarrassment of their situation (being successful or general) Not being earnest rule At the most basic level, an underlying rule in all English conversation is the proscription of “earnestness.” English are probably more acutely sensitive than any other nation to the distinction between serious and solemn, between sincerity and earnestness. serious and sincerity - yes, solemn and earnestness - no.
