In what Koontz called the jungle of management theory, Mintzberg was the founder of the school of managerial roles. The role school is a school of management in the West in the 1970s. It examines the role and work of a manager by focusing on the role of the manager. Mintzberg believes that, for managers, from the managers role, we can find the basic principles of management and apply it to the specific practice of managers.
The representative work of the manager role school is Mintzbergs The Nature of Managerial Work, 1986, China Social Science press. What did managers really do? How do they do it? There are already plenty of ready-made answers to these ancient questions, but Mintzberg does not readily believe these off the shelf answers, but goes deeper into reality. When he was a doctoral student, Mintzberg took a stopwatch to record what the five managers were really doing, not listening to what they were doing or what the academics were thinking about what they were doing. It took him a week to observe and study the activities of five CEO. The five men are from large consulting firms, teaching hospitals, schools, high-tech companies and consumer goods manufacturers. Mintzberg discovered that managers rarely take the time to think long term in the process of enterprise management. They are always drawn by such or such matters and figures without sufficient attention to long-term goals or plans. One obvious fact is that the average time they use to consider a problem is only nine minutes. If the manager wants to fix one thing, the effort is doomed to fail because he is constantly interrupted by others and always needs him to handle other things.
