Trying to be familiar with the history of English literature; Trying to learn some classical works; Trying to appreciate a piece of work by yourself; Trying to practice your spoken English and improve your writing skills. What is literature ? A body of written works related by subject-matter, by language or place of origin, or by prevailing cultural standards of merit. Since the 19th century, the broader sense of literature as a totality of written or printed works. The academic definition concentrates upon poetry, drama, and fiction. The quality that makes serious literature is permanence. Such things as works of information are “here today, gone tomorrow”, but literature is intended to last. So it can increase your knowledge; it can improve your language ability; it can train your thoughts; it can deepen your understanding about yourself … So, enjoy yourself in literature Three Genres of Literature: Fiction definition: fiction created from the imagination, not presented as fact, though it may base on a true story or situation. Elements: Plot, Characters, Setting, Point of view, Theme, Symbols, Allegory, Style, Language, Tone. B. Poetry definition: classified as narrative or lyric. Elements: Imagery An image is a concrete representation of a sense impression, a feeling, or an idea.
