Violence This used to be a concern when going to a football match, but nowadays football hooliganism is very rare. This is partly due to more efficient policing of crowds, but also to the widespread disapproval of troublemakers that has grown up amongst football fans in recent years. In the old days, violence would erupt between large groups of supporters, identified by their wearing team scarves, shirts or other clothing. For this reason, in the UK you can find many pubs and bars that have a notice saying “No Team Colours” - this is to keep fights from starting. This is less useful than it used to be, though, as these days the fans in team colours are the peaceful ones. The ones you have to watch out for are the ones in casual designer clothing - the most popular brands being Burberry, Lacoste and Abercrombie Fitch. These guys are the football “firms”, and they originally adopted their casual look so as to avoid the attention of the police. Firms are organised gangs that fight firms associated with other football clubs. The fights are usually pre-arranged and take place far away from the football grounds to make it harder for the police to catch them.
