It is natural to have misgivings about this; habitual behavior can silence spiritual awareness. Chen Jie uses offhand thoughts and perceptions as the foundation for his sketches. He opened an account on Weibo specifically for this project, which combines images, inscriptions, narrative, and critique. Since 2014, he has posted 59 times. Work in this exhibition collage tales of the supernatural and anecdotes from the web. Text from Weibo, including friends’ comments, is derisive and jocular. A wall in the first exhibition space contains only a line of keywords handwritten by the artist. Viewers can scan QR codes to the bottom-right of the keywords to view the paintings and related texts. In the gallery space, the effect of a crowd of people with their faces buried in their phones, like on a subway or elevator, is particularly striking. The works are unveiled in a second space, where they are stacked sheet by sheet on a table. At the opening, some viewers shot and uploaded photos of people looking at the works. Engaging in a common unconscious habit, viewers of the exhibition are led into consummating a spectacle that comprises all of their actions. The preposterousness of watching a gallery audience transformed into actors on a stage makes for an immersive work.
