Fir st , several p roblems in st udying mechanisms of species coexistence in ecological communities are generalized . Second , some concept s explaining plant and animal species coexistence are reviewed . Wit hin plant communities , t hese concept s include envi ronment al factor s , seed reimmigration , niche differentiation , balanced competition , speciespool , re generation niche , coexistence of ecologically similar species and t he null community . In animal commu nities , t he effect s of p atch , edge , congregation , disper sion , interference and response to environmen t al heterogeneity are discussed .
