Introduction to Internet Security : Protocols, Services, Mechanisms and Management Highlight Duration: 1 Semester (14 weeks) or 40 hour-long lectures Audience: Undergraduate, 3rd year or 4th year Pre-requisites: C programming; internet basics; operating system basics Workload/Week: Lectures (3 hrs); Discussions (1 hr); Experiment (4 hrs); Homework (4 hrs) Homework: Network Experiments (bi-weekly); Team-based Course Project Abstract This semester-long course may be taken by junior and senior undergraduate students. The course covers two essential areas of Internet security: communication security and information security. It also explores the hierarchical organization within each area based on the partition of mechanisms, services and management infrastructure. The aims of the course are (1) to acquaint the students with the process of security system design, which consists of vulnerability assessment, security service architecture and system implementation, (2) to explain the use of modern cryptography and information technology in building interlocking security services through the example of security protocols, and (3) to discuss future development trends and importance of security in the global information infrastructure.
