The American Dream Reflected by the Movie Forrest GumpYan XuemeiAbstract: In 1995, the movie Forrest Gump has won a total of 13 Oscar Award nominations, eventually it won 6. It’s not just a successful movie, it became a public phenomenon. The movie reflected the chaotic society in 1960s in America from the perspective of man with physical disability and low IQ and it involves a number of historical events. From Gump, people can see the good personalities of kindliness, independence, diligence, honesty, loyalty and many other virtues that American are still advocating now, his independence and realistic attitude to life is the best interpretation of American cultural values--individualism. The purpose of the film is to arouse a deep thinking of the past and the American Dream which was cherished by every American people. The American Dream is a concentrated expression of American values. It came from the early puritanism and then developed in Westward Movement, disillusioned in the period of monopoly capitalism. In different time, American Dream has different contents and performance. The thesis analyses the origin, development of the American Dream, the influence and positive significance to Americans.
