Eye Contact Study the information conveyed by eye contact, blinks, eye movements and pupil dilation——Oculesics(目光学) In human beings, eye contact is a form of nonverbal communication and is thought to have a large influence on social behavior. It is believed to show personal involvement and create intimate bonds. *Thou tell’st me there is murder in mine eye. ——Shakespeare *Your eyes said more to me that night than your lips would ever say. —— Bob Dylan *Eye is the window of soul. ——Leonardo Di Ser Piero Da Vinci *In the dominant culture of the United States, direct eye contact is very common and highly valued. *In the United States it is customary to look at the speaker’s mouth when listening but make intermittent (间歇的 ) eye contact with the eyes of a listener when speaking. *Gaze avoidance is associated with “a lack of interest,dishonesty,slyness,and negative attitudes.” Some cultural examples *In Japan, prolonged eye contact: rude, threatening, disrespectful. Korea, and Thailand is also. *A speaker rivets the listener with sustained, unbroken eye contact, but a listener does not make eye contact or look at the speakers face consistently in China. *In Latin American ,Caribbean cultural and Africa, avoiding eye contact: a sign of respect. *Arabs,look directly into the eye of their communication partners,and do so for long. They believe such contact shows interest in other person and helps them assess the truthfulness of the other person’s words. *In India, the amount of eye contact depends on one’s social position. *In Egypt, the issue is not social status but gender. *In the Middle East,extended gaze exchanges:appropriate,interest,truthfulness. *Germans look directly in the eye:honesty,true interest. *Among deaf people,eye contact is the most important part of communication.
