Waiting for Godot By Samuel Beckett ⅠA Brief Introduction Ⅱ Characters; Language; Symbolism Ⅲ Background; Theme; Conclusion A Brief Introduction to Samuel Beckett and Waiting for Godot Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) Irish avant-garde novelist, playwright, theatre director, and poet. Wrote in both French&English His work: a bleak, tragicomic outlook on human nature, often coupled with black comedy and gallows humor. Concerns about Western anxiety and self- doubt in the 20th century. His Novels His trilogy : Molloy (1951); Malone Dies (1958) The Unnamable, (1960). His Drama Theatre of the Absurd: Logical construction and argument gives way to irrational and illogical speech and to its ultimate conclusion, silence. Three important plays: Waiting for Godot; Happy Days; Endgame His plays have a cyclical structure:like a diminishing spiral---- the world and the people in it are slowly but inexorably running down. Waiting For Godot An absurdist play in which two characters, Vladimir and Estragon wait endlessly and in vain for the arrival of someone named Godot. The Setting: a landscape, strange and alien, a country road or an actual lonely road, a single tree. No final closure in the Beckettian universe, the characters take refuge in repetition, repeating their own actions and words and often those of others----- in order to pass the time. ACTⅠ ACTⅡ 1.
