During the process of writing this thesis, I have received a tremendous amount of
help and support from the people whom I would like to express my sincere gratitude

First and foremost, I am deeply indebted to Dr. Hu Jian, my supervisor, who has
given me constant help in the course of my thesis writing. Without her enlightening
suggestions and careful revision, the completion of the present thesis would not have
been possible.
I am also greatly indebted to all the distinguished teachers in the English
Department of Anhui University, Professor Zhu Yue, Professor Zhou Fangzhu,
Professor Zhu Xiaomei, Dr. Zhang Hongxia, Dr. Yang Ling and Dr. Xie Jinsha for
