Applied Lattice Theory Formal Concept Analysis Bernhard Ganter Rudolf Wille The Formal Concept Analysis pro ject was b orn around when a re search group in Darmstadt Germany b egun to systematically develop a frame work for lattice theory applications It was rst presented to the mathematical public in a programmatic lecture given at the Ban conference on Ordered Sets Since then several hundred articles have b een published including a textb o ok on the mathematical foundations The Darmstadt group alone has participated in more than a hundred application co op eration pro jects For mer memb ers of that team have founded a small rm and now make their living from such applications The sophisticated name of Formal Concept Analysis needs to b e explained The metho d is mainly used for the analysis of data ie for investigating and pro cessing explicitly given information Such data will b e structured into units which are formal abstractions of concepts of human thought allowing meaningful and comprehensible interpretation We use the prex formal to emphasize that these formal concepts are mathematical entities and must not b e identied with concepts of the mind The same prex indicates that the basic data format that of a formal c ontext is merely a formalization that enco des only a small p ortion of what is usually referred to as a context Much of the mathematics required for the applications has b een b orrowed directly from lattice theory The basic construction of a complete lattice from a binary relation is explained already in the rst edition of Birkho s Lattice Theory But the new goal made it also necessary to extend and to smo othen the theory Thereby Formal Concept Analysis has created results that may
