Many powerful drugs have been FDA approved and prolong survival. Nevertheless, the realities of long and short term drug side effects as well as the increasing prevalence of multiple strains of HIV that are resistant to these drugs (Chesney, Morin, Sherr, 2000; Siegel, Schrimshaw, Raveis, 2000) underscore the importance of HIV prevention. Behavioral interventions to prevent HIV infection are essential, particularly among high-risk groups such as MSM (Men who have sex with men). Making this even more critical is a new generation of MSM who are now in danger of exposure in a “second wave” of HIV infection (CDC, 1998, 1999a, 1999b; Hogg, Weber, Chan, Martindale, Cook, Miller, Craib, 2001; Mutchler, 2000). Can interactive technologies change risky behavior? Wolitski et al., (2001) argue that one of the reasons for this new wave of HIV infection is that “outdated or overly simplistic safer sex messages for MSM (a common criticism in recent years) have led to a backlash against existing prevention efforts” (p. 883-884). It is crucial, therefore, that HIV prevention interventions keep pace with changes in HIV-related trends and successfully compete for the attention of MSM using technological advances that can enhance message delivery. Attention grabbing and engaging, Interactive Video (IAV) may be better able to compete with and counter messag
