Although its costs generally are underestimated because they are hidden in other budget items and spread across many business units, integration typically consumes 35 percent of a total IS budget. Business pressures and technical innovation contribute to the increasing heterogeneity of an IS portfolio. Application-to-application (A2A) integration within an enterprise may involve applications running on the same computer, on disparate computers within the same data center or on computers in business units anywhere in a worldwide network. Business-to-business (B2B) relationships may involve integrating application systems running in different enterprises (i.e., a form of A2A, except that the As have different owners). B2B also may be conducted by fax, telephone or browser. However, business-to-consumer (B2C) relationships and B2B relationships run by a person at a browser are not application integration. They are simply a form of remote user access. Notwithstanding this scenario, after input is received by an enterprise application, the cooperating internal enterprise systems often require A2A integration. It is important to note that B2B integration and B2C integration are not just about desktop Web browsers. They may involve agents or mobile devices (e.g., mass-access devices, video and cellular phones, digital set-top boxes, electronic books and game consoles).
