It has a strong appeal to the readers. I think Buck is a perfect character with human nature and wild nature. He is so pure and innocent when he sees the snow at the first time. He shakes himself, and licks some with his tongue. He tries to bite the white stuff as it falls through the air. He feels ashamed when the men laugh. But the reality is cruel. The red sweater gives him the first lesson he will never forget. The man hits him with a club strongly. The final blow knocks all senses out of Buck, and he lies motionless on the ground. This scene makes me feel sad. The red sweater is cruel and Buck is pitiful. Buck’s wild nature breaks out when he fights with Spitz for the leadership. In this part, London uses vivid words to describe the battle. Buck shows his wisdom and wild nature, and finally wins the leadership. There exist soft scenes in the novel. I think Buck will never forget the life he spends with Thornton. Thornton treats him as his child. He has a way of taking Buck’s head roughly between his hands, and resting his own head upon Buck’s, he will shakes him back and forth while calling him bad names that Back knows are love names. Buck also has a way of expressing his love that almost hurt. He will often take Thornton’s hand in his mouth and close it so tightly that his teeth make marks.
