【标题】论约拿旦.斯威夫特《格列佛游记》的社会意义 【作者】杨 叶 【关键词】社会意义;讽刺手法 【指导老师】刘 敏 【专业】英语教育 【正文】 Jonathan Swift?(1,667?- 1,745) is the foremost satirist in the English language and one of the satiric masters of all time. His works transcend the limitations of time and place. Some of them are read nowadays in all nations. But in some aspects, he has been a controversial figure. His writings have sometimes been attacked as pessimistic and misanthropic ?? Gulliver’s Travels is his best book, a social and political prose satire, in the form of a book of travels. The thematic concern of the novel reflects the contradictions in English society in the first half of the 18th century. It exposes the corruption and evil of the British ruling class, as well as the mad plunder and cruel exploitation by the British bourgeoisie during the capitalist period of primitive accumulation. This thesis inquires into the social significance of Gullivers Travels, that is, the problem of personal desire and the faint hope of keeping balance between material and spiritual satisfaction. It also analyses the realistic significance of the novel, namely the theme of current political and social situation, which expresses the main idea of the novel. The thesis also analyses the satiric style as revealed in the novel. 1.
