05-0011. JAMES CHAPPELEAR, son of Elias Arnold (#04-0009) Ann Brammell Chappelear, was born 05/23/1766, St. Marys Co, MD. He moved with his father to Culpeper Co., VA about 1781- 1785, where he signed a petition for the formation of a new county. In 1803 he rented a tract of land in Culpeper Co., from his brother William (#05-0012). In 1788 he paid taxes on personal property there, which continued until 1819, when he moved to Morgan Co., OH settling on Sunday Creek not far from Zanesville. He married Margaret Cooke, daughter of Alexander Cooke of St. Marys Co., MD, a copy of whose will is on file in the Culpeper Co. Will Book F, p.313. proved 10/24/1811, in re the right of James Chappelear to remove certain slaves from Maryland to Virginia. An abstract of the will follows: Item. I give and bequeath unto the children of my daughter, Margaret Chappelear, one negro woman named Linder and one negro girl named Mary and their increase to them and their heirs forever to be equally divided among the children of my said Daughter Margaret Chappelear, but my will is that my said Daughter shall have the use of the said negros Linder and Mary during her natural life, but by no means for them to be at the disposal of her husband James Chappelear. In the testimony that the foregoing is a true extract taken from the Last Will Testament of Alexander Cooke, late of St. Marys Co., MD, decd. Which Will was on the 14th day of April 1807, proved, approved recorded in my office. I have set my name official Seal this 24th October 1811. James Forrest, Reg. of Wills There are petitions #5462-A and #8495 in the Archives Dept. of the VA State Library dated 14 Dec. 1809 from James Chappelear, Culpeper Co. VA to the Assembly to permit these slaves to be brought out of the state of Maryland into Virginia. Alexander Cookes will was made 04/14/1809.
