Tap Your Creative Potential Chapter 1 By Alexander Hiam I am often asked to come into an organization as a consultant or trainer to help people “get out of the box” and find new solutions. I’m usually surprised to find I can suggest many novel approaches. Surprised because I’m not necessarily smart than my clients are, and I rarely know their industries as well as they do. But I can see all sorts of alternatives that they can’t because they are failing to “do” creativity in the first place. They are making some obvious errors that trap them in routine thinking and block creative avenues that seem fairly obvious to most outsiders. These sorts of experiences have led me to compile a list of the most common errors—things that routinely block creativity in organizations and for many individuals as well. Since the vast majority of us work and live in circumstances that demand creativity, we all need to get rid of these three worst habits. Failure to Ask Questions Unless you ask lots of “why” questions, you won’t generate creative insight.
