BRITISH PRIMARY SCHOOL Up to age 5, children may have some pre-primary schooling in nursery schools, daycare, or play groups. Between the age of 5 to 11, pupils mainly attend state sector primary schools. These schools are called co-education or mixed schools because they admit both boys and girls. Primary schools are often subdivided into infant schools for children from age 4–7 (Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1) and junior schools for ages 7–11 (Key Stage 2). (Excluding Scotland, where all from age 5-12 are catered for in the one institution.) By law, all children of compulsory school age (between 5 and 16) must receive a full-time education. In areas that adopted a three-tier system, the term primary school is often used as an alternative to First School, taking in ages up to 9 or 10 years old, although for education planning purposes, the term primary education in these areas will still cover the age groups as in a two-tier system. In the private sector, fee-paying schools which provide primary education are known as preparatory schools, and they often cater for children up to the age of thirteen. As their name suggests, preparatory schools are designed to prepare pupils for entrance examinations for fee-paying independent schools. Test Primary school students in England sit standardized tests SATs in Year 6 and in Year 2. These tests are used to provide individual student results and to rank schools according to their performance. Tests include Numeracy, Mental Math, Reading Comprehension, Writing, Spelling and Science. A final level is awarded for Math, English and Science. Wales and Northern Ireland abolished the tests quite some time ago, whilst Scotland never implemented the SATs. Prince Andrew, Duke of York Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex Andrew Russell, 15th Duke of
