The country’s 3G auctions, which were originally scheduled for September 2010, have been delayed indefinitely by legal action. This has derailed Thailand’s 3G growth strategy, putting private operators under growing capacity pressure. Ovum view Three operators dominate the market. GSM operators Advanced Info Service (AIS), Total Access Communication (DTAC), and True Move control over 95% of the mobile market, and as mobile penetration has passed 100%, it will be difficult for smaller players such as Thai Mobile and Hutchison to grow market share. Subscriber growth is now coming from multiple connections and rural prepaid customers, which is adversely affecting ARPU. 3G auction date delayed indefinitely. AIS, DTAC, and True Move had all qualified to participate in Thailand’s 3G auction, which the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) had scheduled to take place on 20 September 2010. The three private operators were eager to obtain spectrum in the 2100MHz band to avoid paying costly concession revenues to government owned telcos CAT Telecom (CAT) and TOT.
