Unit 1　A land of diversity Period 4　Listening and Speaking 整体设计 教学内容分析 The emphasis of this period will be placed on listening and speaking.There are altogether two texts for the students to listen to in this period：one is in the Students Book and the other is in the Workbook.The first one（on Page 6，Listening and speaking）is a conversation between George and Christie.George is a tourist in California and Christie is his friend.They are talking about Georges tour in California.The conversation emphasizes how the land and climate of California varies.It provides examples of how to talk about position，space and direction，and also illustrates ways that listeners indicate that they are listening to the speaker. While listening to the dialogue for the first time the students are asked to get some specific information about it and answer four wh- questions.After listening to the dialogue for a second time the students are asked to get more detailed information and complete the postcard.Check the answers by playing the tape again and pausing when the missing details are given.At last the students are asked to listen to the whole conversation again and note down the expressions about interest，agreement and disagreement. The second one（on Page 46，Listening）is a conversation between Tom and Mandy.They are talking in a radio program.In the program they are talking about New Orleans，another state of the United States. 三维目标设计 Knowledge and skills 1．To understand the meanings of the following key words and expressions while hearing them on the tape：desert（沙漠），race（种族），a quarter of（四分之一），Hispanic（西班牙的；西班牙人的），ancestor（祖先）． 2．To enable the students to understand the listening texts. 3．To help the students learn how to describe a place. Process and methods 1．Smoothing away language problems if any before listening. Before asking the students to listen to the tape，help them smooth away any language problems such as new words and expressions that they may not understand while listening.
