Practical Advice On How to Help Eliminate the Hispanic Achievement Gap in Science Part 1: Effective Teaching Techniques Old Model Historically, multiculturalism in science was viewed as a form of remediation based on a deficit model. The lack of success by culturally diverse students was assumed to stem from their home culture being less advanced than the mainstream. Thus, remediation was designed to compensate for their supposed lack of knowledge, skills and motivation. (Chiappetta and Koballa, 2002) New Model Today, most educators reject this model. It takes practice, time to develop and there are many myths about inquiry that make it difficult for teachers to use. What is inquiry? What is inquiry? Simplest definition – any activity that does the following: Generates question or problem to be solved. Causes selection of a course of action and carrying out procedures of investigation.
