Science fiction is different from fantasy in that its imaginary elements are based on scientific thoughts and laws of nature Readers usually have to “pretend” that these things could actually happen * Elements of Sci Fi Setting in the future, alternative timelines, historical past that contradicts our known history, scenes in outer space or another world Characters that include aliens, mutants, androids, or robots Futuristic technology such as ray guns, transportation machines, computers that can talk, etc. * Elements of Science Fiction Scientific principles such as time travel, wormholes, or faster than light travel New and different political or social systems Paranormal activities like mind control, telepathy, and teleportation Travel between other universes and dimensions * Themes in Science Fiction Man is insignificant in relation to the universe Man will destroy his own environment Technology will make man obsolete, unnecessary Technology will make man a “pampered prisoner” of his own progress The creation of life through scientific advances will diminish the sanctity of life * Themes in Science Fiction Society’s future is in jeopardy because of our ignorance or negligence Man will be seen in a different perspective by aliens or outsiders Planetary interrelationships will change our concept of life Values are most important, regardless of time or place Our technology will turn on us *
