2. How it works (1)Polling The primary device wants to receive data, it asks the secondary if they have anything to send. (2)Selecting The primary device wants to send data, it tells the target secondary to get ready to receive. The receiver must contain sorting logic to enable it to reorder frames received out of sequence. The sender contains searching mechanism that allows it to find and select only the requested frame for retransmit. ACK number ,like NAK number ,must refer to the frame received (or lost) instead of the next frame expected. e.g. ACK5: frame0~frame5 have been received. The second layer in the OSI model, the data link layer had three main functions: line discipline, flow control, error control 2. Line discipline establish the status of a device (sender or receiver) on a link. 3. ENQ/ACK is a line discipline method used in point-to-point connection. 4. The receiving device using ENQ/ACK line discipline responds with an acknowledge (ACK) if is ready to receive data, or a negative acknowledge (NAK) if it is not ready. 5. Poll/select is a line discipline method. the primary device always initiates communication with either a poll or select (SEL) frame. 6. A poll frame is sent to the secondary device by the primary to determine if the secondary has data to send. The secondary can respond by sending a NAK (no data to send) or a data frame. 7.
