Chapter 12 Brakes and Clutches ; 12.1 Types of Brakes and Clutches;Several basic arrangements of brakes and clutches are sketched in Figure 12.1.; 1. This may be accomplished by summing changes in the kinetic energy of translation, changes in the kinetic energy of rotation, and any changes in potential energy due to elevation changes during the response period. Estimate the pressure distribution over the contacting friction surfaces, by either cal-culation or assumption. Determine the pressure at any point in the friction interface as a function of the max-imum local pressure produced when the brake/clutch package is actuated.;Apply the principles of static equilibrium to determine the actuating force, friction torque, and support reactions. Determine suitable materials and dimensions that will provide design-specified values (or ranges) for friction torque and actuating force, including any specified factors of safety. Iterate the proposed design configuration until it meets the functional specifications and operates reliably for the specified design lifetime. Estimate potentially damaging temperature rise induced when the friction-generated heating rate exceeds the cooling rate. ; 12.4 Band Brakes ;12.5 Disk Brakes and Clutches; For single disk clutch, the maximum torque that can be transmitted: For multi-disk clutch, the maximum torque that
